Brian Eno
"Repetition is a form of change"
This nOde
last updated April 11th, 2004 and is permanently morphing...
(13 K'an (Corn) / 7 Pohp - 104/260 - 12.19.11.3.4)

"artist as curator".
An artist is now a curator. An artist
is now much more seen as a connector of things, a person who scans the enormous
field of possible places for artistic attention, and says, What I am going to
do is draw your
attention
to this sequence of things. If you read art history up until 25 or 30 years
ago, you'd find there was this supposition of succession: from Verrocchio, through
Giotto, Primaticcio, Titian, and so on, as if a crown passes down through the
generations. But in the 20th century, instead of that straight kingly line,
there's suddenly a broad field of things that get called art, including vernacular
things, things from other cultures, things using new technologies like photo
and film. It's difficult to make any simple linear connection through them.
Now, the response of early modern art history was to say, Oh, OK. All we do is broaden the line to include more of the things we now find ourselves regarding as art. So there's still a line, but it's much broader. But what postmodernist thinking is suggesting is that there isn't one line, there's just a field, a field through which different people negotiate differently. Thus there is no longer such a thing as "art history" but there are multiple "art stories." Your story might involve foot-binding, Indonesian medicine rituals, and late Haydn string quartets, something like that. You have made what seems to you a meaningful pattern in this field of possibilities. You've drawn your own line. This is why the curator, the editor, the compiler, and the anthologist have become such big figures. They are all people whose job it is to digest things, and to connect them together.
-
Kevin
Kelly interviews Brian Eno in
WIRED.
PZ: Do you think the musicians will recognize it when you're done with it?
BE: Oh yeah, because what I will
do then is link those pieces together. Maybe a 16-bar fragment, make a
part out of that, then take a bit from another song and put it in. I call
this body of work
Ju-Ju
Space Jazz. It has the sort of discoördination that you sometimes
get in jazz which I like very much. You get this formula where they play
the riff together, and then it all falls apart for 20 minutes, and they
play the riff again. And then everyone goes home. [laughter]
I'm trying to get that feel of that middle bit. But with the threat that
there might be some kind of coming
together at some point.
- interview with Brian Eno - _Ambiguity, Yams & Ju-Ju Spacejazz_ By Pamela Z
"Walter Benjamin's concept of 'Rezeption
in der Zerstreuung,' originally conceived for film, is as valid for radio and
records. According to Benjamin the mass reception of art is accompanied by a
steady decline in the
attention
given to the individual work of art: music has become environmental sound, the
radio produces ambience, the quality of which can be measured by the ease with
which it goes in one ear and out the other. Continuos and omnipresent,
radio generates habituation and demands no more than an absent minded attention.
With radio it's often less a matter of what there is to hear than that there
is something to hear. The radio is on. The question is whether artists are satisfied
with this and, imitating Brian Eno, will make 'ambient music' ridiculing the
dispersal of attention." Max Bruinsma, Talking Back to the Media, Amsterdam,
1985. Also, see Freud's paper On Narcissism and Ovid's The Story of Narcisus
& Echo.

Having a Breakthrough Day Hey man you want a card? They're um... Oblique Strategies... no two cards are alike, you can think about whatever you want, and you take a card...
Cadillac Crook Sure..
Having a Breakthrough Day what did you get?
Cadillac Crook it says uh... "withdrawing in disgust is not the same thing as apathy..."
In an interview (first published
on the web) conducted while Eno was promoting his album _Nerve Net_ a few years
ago, the interviewer noted that Eno described his music as "godless." He
responded "Well, I'm an atheist, and the concept of god for me is all part of
what I call the last illusion. The last illusion is someone knows what is going
on. That's the last illusion. Nearly everyone has that illusion somewhere, and
it manifests not only in the terms of the idea that there is a god but that
it knows what's going on but that the planets know what's going on. Astrology
is part of the last illusion. The obsession with health is part of the last
illusion, the idea that there's that if only we could spend
time
on it and sit down and stop being unreasonable with each other we'd all find
that there was a structure and a solution underlying plan to it all, for most
people the short answer to that is god."
