dream (drêm) noun
1. A series of images,
ideas, emotions, and sensations occurring involuntarily in the mind
during certain stages of sleep.
2. A daydream; a reverie.
3. A state of abstraction;
a
trance.
4. A wild fancy or hope.
5. A condition or
achievement that is longed for; an aspiration: a dream of owning their
own business.
6. One that is exceptionally
gratifying, excellent, or beautiful: Our new car runs like a dream.
"Looking at what people with shamanic
traditions say about dreams, one comes to the realization that for
those people dream
reality is
experientially a parallel continuum. The
shaman accesses this continuum with
hallucinogens as well as with other
techniques, but most effectively with hallucinogens. Everyone
else accesses it through dreams. Freud's idea about dreams was
that they were what he called "day residues," and that one could trace
the content of the dream down to a distortion of something that
happened during waking time."
-
Terence
McKenna -
_Archaic
Revival_
- People spend an average of 6 years of
their lives dreaming.
- The word "dreamt" is the only word in the
English
language that ends in the
letters 'mt'.
Anomalog:
"When you dream there are no rules, people
can
fly, anything can happen. Sometimes,
there's a moment as you're waking, that you become aware of the real
world around you, but you're still dreaming. You may think you can fly,
but you better not try it..."
- David
Duchovny's (of the X-Files) character in the film _Kalifornia_

lucid dreaming
i tried lucid dreaming
exercises out of the pages of OMNI magazine around 1984. when i
stopped
doing the exercises was about the same time i stopped remembering my
normal
dreams. since 1985, i have never remembered a single dream.
several times i've been at the stage where i woke up from some
nightmare,
thinking to myself "i HAVE to remember this one", but i fall back
asleep
and end up not remembering. the thing is, at this point, i don't
want to remember my dreams. since 1990 i feel that i'm living in
them. i feel that the morning i wake up and remember my dream, is
when the good stuff ends. it's been really good the last ten
years.

my personal theory on
dreams is this: some people say that this is the time we get rid of
"crud" built up by our
CNS as it
processes data (like the "purge" command, or
"compact" command... basically, the CNS is very busy while conscious
in
filtering and adjusting to
different
frequencies to create
perceptual reality. this wild
foray during the course of a normal day, excesses "build up" and we
have to get rid of it. the filtered and processed
information then gets uploaded in clean
form into the morphogenetic field. - @Om* 6/17/02
"All life is only a set
of pictures in the brain, among which there is no difference betwixt
those born of
real things and
those born of inward dreamings, and no cause to value the one above the
other."
-
H.P. Lovecraft
the
platypus
and the echidna have huge brains given their low
intelligence. scientists speculate that they need this higher
brain to IQ ratio, because they do not have dreams to aid in the
learning
process.

In
James Joyce's
_Ulysses_, Stephen Dedalus tells us, "History
is the nightmare from which I am trying to awaken". I would turn this
around and say that history is what we are trying to escape from into
dream. The dream is
eschatological. The
dream is
zero time and outside of history. We
wish to escape into the dream. Escape is a key thing charged against
those who would experiment with plant
hallucinogens.
The people who make this charge hardly dare face the degree to which
hallucinogens are escapist. Escape. Escape from the planet, from death,
from habit, and from the problem, if possible, of the Unspeakable.
-
Terence McKenna - _New Maps Of
Hyperspace_
"One of the most ancient
and most celebrated images of the
shaman
is a scene that was painted in the Lascaux temple cave twenty thousand
years ago. It depicts a male figure, arms spread like wings, with
an erect penis. Behind him is his bird-staff; tossing its horns
before him, an enormous bull. The shaman is journeying in
ecstatic
trance. Sleep-laboratory techicians started
noticing back in the 1950's that penile erection in men is often
associated with the REM state; they are just getting round to observing
the corresponding, but subtler symptoms in women. What the men in
white coats have not told us is what was known to the artist of
Lascaux, twenty thousand years before EEGs: that penile erection (in
men) is the most consistent physical re-action associated with a
journey out of the body. This is more than a casual side effect.
The same energy that may be released in the physical act of sex is
harnessed and used like a jet propellant. In the
language of the East, this is the raising
of
Kundalini, the 'serpent
power,' and it is at the heart of all real
magic'.
One of the easiest ways to initiate a journey outside your physical
body is to allow yourself to become sexually aroused without expending
that energy in
immediate
physical gratification. You can do this alone, through fantasy,
or with the help of an adventurous partner (who does not need to be
with you in the same physical space). If you are experimenting
alone, you should try to withhold orgasm completely and switch the
energy to the second plane, beyond the physical. If you are in bed with
a partner, you should delay physical release for as long as possible
and again
focus on switching the energy to
move into a different
dimension.
If both of you are bold spirits, you might try to arrange an astral
assignation, which you will both attend in your dreambodies. In
addition to play you may then be able to undertake all sorts of joint
experiments and explorations and compare the results. There is a
dual challenge in this. The first is to honor your natural sex
energy without fear or guilt, without confusing the underlying
force with the purely physical expression of
sexuality. The second is to avoid losing the fundamental purpose
in the party scenes you may encounter on the lower levels of the astral
planes."
- Robert
Moss in _Conscious Dreaming_
- "A dream we dream alone is only a dream. A
dream we dream together is
reality."
- Yoko Ono
- "What you can do, or dream you can do, begin
it; boldness has genius, power and
magic
in it." -
Johann von Goethe
- "All that we see or seem Is but a dream
within a dream." - Edgar Allan Poe - 1849
(Main character is
walking along the railroad tracks, beside a train. A guy jumps out of
the train with a "Free Radio" t-shirt on)
Hey. You a dreamer?
Yeah.
I haven't seen too
many
around lately. Things have been tough lately for dreamers. They say
dreaming
is dead, that no one does it anymore. But it's not dead, it's just been
forgotten. Removed from our
language.
Nobody teaches it so no one knows it exists. The dreamer has been
banished
to obscurity. Well, I'm trying to change all that now, and I hope you
are
too. By dreaming every day. Dreaming with our hands and dreaming with
our
minds. Our planet is facing the greatest problems it's ever faced, so
whatever
you do, don't be bored. This is absolutely the most exciting
time
we could have possibly hoped to be alive. And things are just starting.
