"Mind at its beginning. Awakening
of your
True
Self. I felt I had been plunged into a magic universe. My awareness was a circle
and then a globe. Arbitrary forms became
transient.
The table was not a table. Then I fell into a
trance
- everything around me had a shimmering quality. Nothing was real. This passed
and I felt I had lost the one
reality.
My table was a table once more."
- Duncan Idaho in _Dune_
"
Laws
to suppress tend to strengthen what they would
prohibit.
This is the fine point upon which all the legal professions of history have
based their job security."
- Bene Gesserit Coda.
The music of a civilization
has far-reaching consequences on consciousness and, thus, influences the
basic nature of a society. Music and its rhythms divert and compel the
awareness, describing the limits within which a consciousness, thus fascinated,
may operate. Control the music, then, and you own a powerful tool with
which to shape the society.
- The Dosadi Analysis,
BuSab documents. By Frank Herbert.
The interesting thing about
such dunes is that they bear a resemblance to the
forcethat
created them, wind. It is as if each grain of sand were a bit inside
the
memory
of a natural computer. The wind is the input that arranges the grains
of sand so that they become a lower-
dimensional
template of a higher-dimensional phenomenon, in this case the wind.
There is nothing
magical
about this, and it does not seem mysterious to us: wind, a pressure
that is variable over
time,
creates a rippled dune, which is a structure regularly variable in space.
In my thinking, the genes of organisms are grains of sand arranged by the
ebb and
flow
of the winds of time. Naturally, then, organisms bear the imprint
of the inherent variables in the temporal medium in which they arose.
DNA
is the blank slate upon which the changing temporal variables have had
their sequence and relative differences recorded. Any technique that
saw into the energetic relationships within a living organism, such as
yoga or the use of
psychedelic
plants, would also give a deep insight concerning the variable nature of
time. The King Wen sequence of the
I
Ching is the product of this kind of insight. Human culture is a curve
of expanding potentiality. In our own tormented century it has reached
vertical gain. Human beings threaten every species on the planet.
We have stockpiled radioactive materials everywhere, and every species
on earth can feel this. The planet when viewed as a sentient entity
can react to this kind of pressure. It is three billion years old,
and it has many options.

In the Dune books, Ix is
the 9th planet from its
sun
(hence the name), and the technological center of the known universe. All
computers (thinking machines) were destroyed in a jihad, and Ix tries to
come as close to building them as the can. They do stuff like cloning,
raising the (select) dead, building artificial limbs (and eyes) and making
weapons.

A

cannot be understood by stopping it. Understanding must move
with the
flow
of the process, must join it and flow with it.

Ridley
Scott worked on bringing the film to the screen, but was unsuccessful.
H.R. Giger (who worked with Scott on
_Alien_
(1979)
)
was hired as a production designer. An earlier attempt at filming the movie
in the 70s never got off the ground, but would have featured designs by
Jean Giraud and H. R. Giger, a soundtrack by
Pink
Floyd, and Salvador Dali as Emperor Shaddam IV.

synchronicity
- Director
David
Lynch and producer Raffaella De Laurentiis arranged a screen test in
New York with Sean Young for the role of Chani. Young's agent
never told Young about the meeting, and she was in fact booked on
a flight that evening to Los Angeles. Lynch and De Laurentiis
missed their flight back to
Los
Angeles, and ended up catching the same plane as Young.
During the flight, De Laurentiis noticed Young and told Lynch "I
bet that girl's an actress." A stewardess told the pair that
her name was Sean Young, and De Laurentiis confronted Young about
standing her and Lynch up. The misunderstanding sorted out, the three
ended up drinking champagne and reading the script together.

Director and writer Don Coscarelli is a big fan of Frank Herbert. There
is a bar named "Dune" in one scene. There are also other, non-hidden references
scattered throughout.

Once scene called for Duke Leto (Jurgen Prochnow)
to be strapped to a black stretcher and drugged. During one take,
a high- powered bulb positioned above Prochnow exploded due to heat, raining
down molten glass. Remarkably, Prochow was able to free himself
from the stretcher, moments before before glass fused itself to the
place he had been strapped. During the filming of the
dream
sequence, the Baron (Kenneth McMillan approached Leto, who had special
apparatus attached to his face so that
green
smoke would emerge from his cheek when the Baron scratched it. Although
thoroughly tested, the smoke gave Prochnow first and second degree
burns on his cheek. This sequence appears on film in the released
version.

There are rumor of a 6-hour long director's cut, but
there has never been any concrete proof of it being released. A book
by Frank Herbert himself claims that 12 hours of footage was filmed.
They cut it to 6, considered releasing it as a mini-series, but decided
to cut it down to 2 and released it theatrically.
-
Some scenes were filmed in the same location and at
the same time as scenes from _Conan the Destroyer_ (1984).
