Communications and Media, 1877

A hand-cranked "phonograph or speaking machine" demonstrated by Thomas Edison November 29 records sounds on grooved metal cylinders wrapped in tinfoil. Edison has followed up on his internal linktelephone research, shouts the verses to "Mary Had a Little Lamb" into his machine, is astonished when it plays his voice back, applies for a patent in December, and is soon attracting paid audiences at "exhibitions" of the machine.

The gramophone patented by Emile Berliner of 1877 loose-internal linkcontact telephone transmitter fame improves on Edison's phonograph  by substituting a disk and a horizontally moving needle for Edison's cylinder and vertically moving needle. The groove in Berliner's disk propels the arm of his gramophone automatically, eliminating the need for the separate drive mechanism that Edison's machine requires, but the pivoted tone arm of the gramophone has a fixed head and a tracking error that causes distortion in the music amplified through the large horn attached to its tone arm.

shockingly accurate portrayal of nineties warehouse rave culture... they got the drugs right, and there was a minimal amount of cheese.  it's good that someone got most of the vibe down - from the sincere first timers to the infantilism....  it was almost pro drug (a good thing).  the effects of drugs,  and the acting of, were fairly accurate.  my opinion on why this worked? -   music supervisor: wade hampton (aka W aka Domestic aka DJ WishFM)
