Johnny Rotten has been marketing
his "
truth"
slogan quite loudly as of late. His
mantra
is to "be truthful". of course, one has to assume that an objective truth
about anything exists in the first place.
His whole career is riding on the Sex Pistols mythology. He's doing a hell of a lot lately to destroy it, and himself by harping on this notion of being honest and truthful. The mythology persists, and supports his income, his reunion tour, and his new show on VH1, Rotten television. He comes off as a complete ham. He's been deeply hurt by Malcolm McLaren, not getting paid, and being washed up in L.A. This has caused an overcompensation in his psyche about "telling the truth". Most people have told their version of the truths, including Rotten. His version is fascinating, but that's it. I will never know exactly what happened, but as with all versions, I believe it's tainted with personal belief and hype.
it's too bad. he was a very potent frontperson
for a fluke of a band. his movement and presence on stage is unequalled,
and he will not age gracefully. personal space/time
relevancy:
late 1975 when he joined the Pistols, through the breakup of the band in San
Francisco January 1978. he captured the English everyman turned inside
out during that time period, with venemous accuracy. these days it doesn't
really work. when he was hungry and lean, he was most effective.
there was nothing "vicious" about it, just "rotten". - @Om*

Lydon writes in the liner notes of the 1992 single _Cruel_ -- "Where is god? I see no evidence of god. god is probably Barry Manilow."
In the November 18, 1998 issue _The Independent_ (a UK daily newspaper), Manilow is questioned by readers. Two of interest are below:
Q: Do you believe in god?
A: Yes. His name is Clive Davis, and he's the head of my record company.
Q: How important is your Judaism to you?
A: It isn't. My humanism
is.
