lens
lens (lènz) noun
plural lenses
1.A ground or molded piece
of glass, plastic, or other transparent material with opposite surfaces
either or both of which are curved, by means of which
light
rays are refracted so that they converge or diverge to form an image.
2.A combination of two or
more such pieces, sometimes with other optical devices such as prisms,
used to form an image for viewing or photographing. Also called compound
lens.
3.A device that causes radiation
other than light to converge or diverge by an action analogous to that
of an optical lens.
4.A transparent, biconvex
body of the eye between the iris and the vitreous humor that
focuses
light rays entering through the pupil to form an image on the retina.
verb, transitive
lensed, lensing, lenses
Informal.
To make a photograph or
movie of.
[New Latin lêns, from
Latin, lentil (from the shape of a double convex lens).]

Think about this for a moment: If
the human mind does not loom large in the coming history of the human race,
then what is to become of us? The future is bound to be
psychedelic,
because the future belongs to the mind. We are just beginning to push the buttons
on the mind. Once we take a serious engineering approach to this, we are going
to discover the plasticity, the mutability, the eternal nature of the mind and,
I believe, release it from the monkey. My vision of the final human future is
an effort to exteriorize the soul and internalize the body, so that the exterior
soul will exist as a superconducting lens of translinguistic matter generated
out of the body of each of us at a
critical
juncture at our psychedelic bar mitzvah. From that point on, we will be eternal
somewhere in the solid-state
matrix
of the translinguistic lens we have become. One's body image will exist as a
holographic
wavetransform
while one is at play in the fields of the lord and living in
Elysium.
-
Terence
McKenna - _Tryptamine
Hallucinogens
And Consciousness_
No thing. One of the chapters I
wrote once was "The Non-sense of No-thing," -- the nonsense of nothing. But
it's nonsensory, because senses are lenses, and as
David
Bohm has said so well, if you take the lenses away you've got a
hologram.
Lenses tend to reify, to objectify and articulate particles. Take the lenses
away and you've got distribution.
- Karl Pribram

For Pribram, this synthesis
made him realize that the objective world does not exist, at least not
in the way we are accustomed to believing. What is "out there" is a vast
ocean of
waves
and frequencies, and reality looks concrete to us only because our brains
are able to take this holographic blur and convert it into the sticks and
stones and other familiar objects that make up our world. How is the brain
(which itself is composed of frequencies of matter) able to take something
as insubstantial as a blur of frequencies and make it seem solid to the
touch? "The kind of mathematical
process
that Bekesy simulated with his vibrators is basic to how our brains construct
our image of a world out there," Pribram states. In other words, the smoothness
of a piece of fine china and the feel of beach sand beneath our feet are
really just elaborate versions of the phantom limb syndrome.
According to Pribram this does not mean there aren't china cups and grains of beach sand out there. It simply means that a china cup has two very different aspects to its reality. When it is filtered through the lens of our brain it manifests as a cup. But if we could get rid of our lenses, we'd experience it as an interference pattern. Which one is real and which is illusion? "Both are real to me," says Pribram, "or, if you want to say, neither of them are real."

THE LENS OF
PERCEPTION
by Hal Zina Bennett 1987
"Every thing in nature contains all the powers of nature. Every thing is made of ONE hidden stuff." _Emerson_

"We know that in advanced
physics, reality is inevitably altered by the presence of the observer.
The billions of electrons that make up the observer himself interact with
electrons that make up the thing being observed, changing it structure.
In the words of physicist Ludwig Boltzmann: My observation has not only
recorded
reality.
I am much more than an objective observer, since my presence, the presence
of the particles that make up my very being, alters that reality.
French physicist Jean Charon
has stated that the INTERACTIONS OF THOSE SAME PARTICLES, more specifically,
the electrons, CONSTITUTE WHAT RELIGIOUS
THINKERS HAVE DESCRIBED
AS THE WORLD OF SPIRIT. This, of course, includes the billions of electrons
that we each carry around as our selves. Because our physical beings, as
well as our thoughts and feelings, are made possible by INTERACTIONS between
electrons both inside and outside our physical boundaries, we theoretically
are always in communion with the universe and with the
Logos.
The Lens of Perception, highly charged with electrons that store our personal
history, plays a very great part indeed, constantly interacting with that
which we observe, and constantly changing it.
On the one hand, we accept the possibility that
electrons buzzing about in our consciousness can affect the physical world
beyond the boundaries of our skin. But the implications go further than
that. Each person is also the RECEIVER of those buzzings- you of my buzzing,
me of yours. If your buzzing electrons can affect the physical world, does
it not follow that those same buzzings can affect me, since both my consciousness
and my physical body are made up of material that is responsive to the
electrons --indeed, I am electrons myself. It is at this point that psychology,
spiritual questions and physics truly merge, asking us to take a
quantum
leap in our thinking.
Ludwig Boltzmann tells us:
ONLY WHEN ONE ADMITS THAT
SPIRIT AND WILL ARE NOT SOMETHING OVER AND ABOVE THE BODY, but rather complicated
actions of material parts whose ability so to act becomes increasingly
perfected by development, only when one admits that intuition, will and
self-consciousness are merely the highest stages of
development of these physio
chemical
forces
of matter by which primeval protoplasmic
bubbles
were enabled to seek regions that were more favorable and
avoid those that were less
favorable for them, only then does every thing become clear in psychology.
DANCING THE LOGOS
During the time that I was
involved in the theater, I became particularly interested in
dances
and dramatic performances in which both performers and audience were transported
beyond the borders of their egos into paranormal consciousness states.
Typically, performers donned ceremonial garb and masks to depict gods,
goddesses, animal entities, and various FORCES in nature that played important
roles in their mythology. Dancing to steady, monotonous rhythms- sometimes
influenced by
hallucinogenics-
the actors assumed the characters of these entities. In the
process,
the dancer was released from his own ego, and for a period took on another
identity.
By assuming other characters and then surrendering
to them one gained access to knowledge they might otherwise not have been
able to access. With ego suspended, every day perceptions
dissolved,
the players became open to the "Universal
Truths,"
or to that which the biblical scholars call "The Logos."
It is my belief that through
observing the theater within the Lens of Perception, and through participating
in that inner community of which that theater is a part, we not only gain
a greater understanding of our individual lives, and our life purposes,
we gain access to the universal knowledge described above. The
trance
for some people-performers and spectators alike- BECAUSE THEY MIMIC A PROCESS
THAT IS ALREADY GOING ON INSIDE EACH ONE OF US.
The success of the INDIVIDUAL
as a participant in the Logos is dependent on a kind of peace and harmony
established between the inner world and the outer one. If we are to prosper,
if we are to enjoy satisfying relationships, if we are to enjoy the very
best in ourselves we must NOT avoid the inner world. Not every one need
do that consciously or deliberately, of course. There are many fully happy,
successful, and
evolved
people who are not in the least aware of the process I'm describing but
are able to embrace the inner world and join it with the most positive
influences in the external world. Part of their success may be luck, part
of it may be that they practice some of the process I describe without
knowing it.
The study of the Lens of Perception is NOT the
only one way of getting what you need from your inner world. There are
many others, and many teachers now available. This seems to be a
time
when
information
of this kind is being made widely available and usually without the long
initiation processes that are associated with the traditions out of which
they come.
Until the past two decades,
techniques for getting to know the inner world, and for traveling safely
within it have been in the hands of an elite the priest, the
Oracle,
the guru, the
shaman
and more recently the psychologist. But now we are living in a time of
rapid change, when greater and greater numbers of people are asking for
tools to expand their understanding and mastery of their own inner worlds.
In the Reformation of the sixteenth century, mankind claimed and won the
right to private judgement in interpreting the Bible. Now the struggle
is more quiet and more subtle, without violence, and often without public
fanfare, but no less important than what happened 400 years ago. As Marilyn
Ferguson has pointed out in her book _THE AQUARIAN
CONSPIRACY_
it is a revolution "Whose roots are old and deep in human history, (and
which) belongs to all of us."
***
Emerson spoke of "the voices
which we hear in solitude" which sadly "grow faint and inaudible as we
enter into the world." He spoke of these voices as the true
SOURCE of each person, guiding
him or her in the path intended Each person's true power was to be recognized
by the awakening and expression of the voice in
the world:
"The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried."
It is in the service of these goals that our renewed interest in the inner world is being directed, since it is through the skills and insights unfolding here that the voice within gains the strength required to meet both the personal and global challenges before us."
