manta (màn´te)
noun
1.A rough-textured cotton
fabric or blanket made and used in Spanish America and the southwest United
States.
2.Any of several rays of
the family Mobulidae, inhabiting tropical and subtropical seas and having
a large flattened body, winglike pectoral fins, a whiplike tail, and two
hornlike fins that project forward from the head. In this sense, also called
devilfish, manta ray, sea devil.
Ray
Ray, common name for any
of about 425 species of cartilaginous fishes found in almost all seas.
Rays have broad, flattened bodies, with eyes on the dark upper surface,
and mouth and gills on the lighter-colored lower surface. The tail is slender
and whiplike. Rays have blunt teeth, adapted for crushing the shells of
mollusks and crustaceans. They often bury themselves in the sand of the
ocean bottom and change colors for camouflage. They vary from a few centimeters
to more than 6 m (about 20 ft) in width. The largest rays are known as
the devilfish, sea
bats,
or mantas.
Scientific classification: Rays belong to the class Chondrichthyes.
