moss
moss (môs), small primitive
plant typified by tufted growth that is usually vertical; alternately considered
a member of the class Bryopsida or division Bryophyta (see BRYOPHYTE). Although
limited to moist habitats because they require
water
for FERTILIZATION and lack a vascular system for absorbing water, mosses are
extremely hardy and grow nearly everywhere. The
green
moss plant visible to the naked eye, seldom over 6 in. (15.2 cm) in height,
is the GAMETOPHYTE generation, which gives rise to the sporophyte generation.
Mosses have some importance in soil formation and provide food for certain animals.
SPHAGNUM, or peat moss, is commercially valuable as the main constituent of
PEAT. CLUB MOSS and SPANISH MOSS are unrelated to true moss.
Carrageenan is a common ingredient in ice cream and toothpaste. Carrageenan is seaweed. A purple, edible seaweed, also known as Irish moss, that's found along the coasts of Northern Europe and North America. It's used as a suspending agent in foods, pharmaceuticals and liquids, as a clarifying agent for beverages, and in controlling crystal growth in frozen confections.

On Earth, moss spores take root and send out tiny sprouts
known as protonemata. The sprouts grow in all directions to make a tangled mass
of moss growth. However, the moss that grew aboard Space Shuttle Columbia grew
in perfect, clockwise spirals that didn't look like any moss growth on Earth.
