The Nephilim are the subject of an obscure reference in the old testament that has been cited in connection with internal linkimagined breeding activities involving humans and extraterrestrials in ancient times.  In Genesis internal link6:04, the Nephilim are described as powerful men or giants who lived on Earth when the "sons of god" had children by human females.  There are various interpretations of this passage.  One interpretation is that it refers merely to very large, strong men.  According to another interpretation, the pasage refers to the godly descendants of Seth, third son of Adam, taking wives from among the ungodly descendants of Cain.  A third interpretation is that the Nephilim were fallen angels (that is, demons) who had intercourse with women on Earth and produced a monstrous race that was destroyed in the biblical flood.  In any event, it is a long step of the imagination from Genesis 6:04 to the genetic manipulatoin attributed to extraterrestrials in modern internal linkUFO mythology.

A hypothetical race of extraterrestrials, the Nefilim feature in the writings of internal linkZecharia Sitchin, who suggests that humans were created to serve as slaves for the Nefilim when the internal linkaliens supposedly came to Earth to mine gold and other valuables metals.  According to Sitchin's hypothesis, the Nefilim came from Marduk, a planet in the far outer reaches of our solar system.  Sitchin suggets that the Nefilim became the deities of human mythology.  Sithcin's speculations about the Nefilim resemble the tents of the "ancient astronauts" phenomenon.
