PEZ Candy was first marketed as a compressed peppermint
candy over 70 years ago in Vienna, Austria. The name PEZ was derived from
the German word for peppermint...PfeffErminZ. Today, over 3 billion PEZ
Candies are consumed annually in the U.S.A. alone.

Initially sold as a breath aid for cigarette smokers.
Original flavor was peppermint.

The first dispensers weren't introduced until the
late 1940's and are now referred to as "regulars" - they lacked the character
heads PEZ is famous for.
Flavors available in the U.S.:grape, lemon,
orange, strawberry, and peppermint
cherry is available in Canada, raspberry and apple
in Spain, and chocolate is available in Hungary and Thailand.
An unusual type known as IZO PEZ is also available
- it is vitamin enriched.
The most unusual flavors, however, have to be the
discontinued ones: Chlorophyll, Cinnamon, Coffee,
Eucalyptus,
Flower, Licorice, and Menthol.
