PEZ Candy was first marketed as a compressed peppermint candy over 70 years ago in Vienna, Austria. The name PEZ was derived from the German word for peppermint...PfeffErminZ. Today, over 3 billion PEZ Candies are consumed annually in the U.S.A. alone.

Invented by Eduard Haas III in Vienna, Austria in 1927.
Initially sold as a breath aid for cigarette smokers. Original flavor was peppermint.
The German word for peppermint is PfeffErminZ.
The first dispensers weren't introduced until the late 1940's and are now referred to as "regulars" - they lacked the character heads PEZ is famous for.

Flavors available in the U.S.:grape, lemon, orange, strawberry, and peppermint
cherry is available in Canada, raspberry and apple in Spain, and chocolate is available in Hungary and Thailand.

An unusual type known as IZO PEZ is also available - it is vitamin enriched.

The most unusual flavors, however, have to be the discontinued ones: Chlorophyll, Cinnamon, Coffee, Eucalyptus, Flower, Licorice, and Menthol.
