the various Aboriginal tribes had their own particular Dreamtime
legends and cultural practices. There were some similarities, but also
a large number of differences. One common mythical character was the Rainbow
Serpent. This is hardly surprising. After all rainbows are a common phenomenon
and the Aborigines had a 'story' about everything that they observed (or
happened in their land). The Rainbow Serpent (not surprisingly), was associated
with water
and life. In our own times, we associate rainbows with a 'pot of gold'
(which is a pertinent metaphor that distinguishes 'our' beliefs from those
of the Aboriginal people - with one race primarily concerned with money
and possessions, the other with nature and high concerns for the environment.
