sonar
sonar (so´när´),
device for the location of submerged objects and for submarine detection
and communication at sea. Capable of rotation, it can scan a surrounding
area. The device projects subsurface sound waves and, as a HYDROPHONE,
listens for returning echoes, determining the range and bearing of submerged
targets. Returning signals may be audibly sounded through a loudspeaker
and/or visually displayed by a CATHODE-RAY TUBE. Simpler sonar devices
are used as depth finders and to locate schools of fish.
Lewis Nixon invents sonar in 1906.
